He survived the war.

Now, Liberty House is helping him survive the return home.

When Patrick came home from Afghanistan, he carried the “invisible wounds” of post-traumatic stress and the crushing silence that follows military service.

He tried to navigate civilian life alone, but the isolation finally pulled him under. He spiraled into homelessness. He relapsed. His life was unraveling.

But Patrick’s story didn’t end there. He found his way to Manchester-based Liberty House, where there was a bed to sleep in – and a reason to wake up. Here, men like Patrick find the structure, support and the brotherhood they lost when they left the service.

Every year, Liberty House turns compassion into action:

  • 40,606 pantry items of food, clothing and other essentials were distributed through our community pantry.
  • 5,270 collective nights of transitional housing provided to veterans facing housing insecurity.

Liberty House is more than a shelter. It’s New Hampshire’s only truly sober recovery residence.

We’re committed to a strict, 4-step path to independence:

  • Recovery: A zero-tolerance, substance-free brotherhood built on trust and accountability.
  • Health & Wellness: Healing the mind and body, sometimes with the help of Ezra, our beloved facility dog.
  • Employment: Not just day labor, but building meaningful careers and steady income.
  • Independence: Leaving with savings, stability, and the keys to their own apartment.

Today, Patrick is doing the hard work of rebuilding – reconnecting with his family, securing a career, and rediscovering the leader he was meant to be.

But there are still more New Hampshire veterans in the dark. Join our email list or make a gift to help ensure no veteran has to face the return home alone.
